Nomaoi Festival is the Samurai Festival in Soma city, Fukushima, Japan
In the last February, I reported about the relationship between the Republic of Djibouti in Africa and my hometown, Minami Soma city in Fukushima, Japan. The relationship between our countries started because our town received a lot of donation from them after the damage of the great Tohoku earthquake and Tsunami in 2011. Last time we visited them to report about the recovery from the damage and to return the favor. Sine they also had a strong request to bring karatedo instructors from Japan. I was invited to the country at that time.
This time I would like to report about the further friendship with the Republic of Djibouti through Karatedo. Our friendship developed more, and we invited two karate instructors and eight children from the country to our town. The leader of the party was the president of Djibouti Karate Federation, Mr. Kanano. He is also the vice president of Olympic Committee in the Republic of Djibouti.
In Soma city, we have "Nomaoi" festival in the last weekend of July every year. It is the Samurai festival. People, wearing a real samurai armor, ride on a horse and they fight on a filed. It is listed as one of the 309 Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties of Japan. We invited them to this Samurai festival. Children from Djibouti were very excited to see the samurai on a horse! It was the first time for some of them to see a real horse. Watching the parade of samurai on a horse, they said "Gorgeous!"
Next day, there was a friendship meeting by children in Soma city and Mr. Kanano. We also practiced karate together. We needed to communicate in French. I think it was a great experience for children. I wish our friendship will last forever. After that, they went sightseeing in Tokyo and left for Djibouti. We are looking forward to seeing them again.

ジブチ共和国との交流 先日報告したジブチ共和国との交流に進展があったので報告致します。 今回の報告はホストタウン事業で日本からジブチ共和国(以下ジブチ)を訪問させていただいた交流の続きで、ジブチから空手指導者とジブチ国内から選抜された子供達、計10名を南相馬市へ招待した内容になっています。
福島県南相馬市では毎年7月の最終週末に国指定重要無形民俗文化財「相馬野馬追」が開催されており、このお祭りへジブチ関係者を招待しました。 ジブチから、ジブチ共和国空手道連盟 総裁 兼 ジブチ共和国オリンピック委員会 副総裁の アブドゥルカデール・ブルハン・カナノ 氏(以下、カナノ氏)が引率で来日してくださいました。 ジブチの子供達は初めて見る騎馬武者に大興奮！ 中には初めて馬を見たと言う子供もいました。 この騎馬武者行列を見た感想は「美しい！」でした。 毎年見ている私としては 美しい と言う感想がとても新鮮でした。(子供の頃から日常にあるので) 翌日、南相馬支部の生徒達とジブチ空手指導者カナノ氏の交流があり、一緒に練習した後には和室で子供達と質疑応答を行い交流を行ないました。 初めて話すフランス語、違う文化に触れて子供達は大変刺激を受けていました。 両国の友好がこれからも永きに渡り交流していける事を願っています。 その後、東京観光をし、成田空港からジブチ訪問団は帰国しました。 また、会える日を楽しみにしています。
