Each year, Itosu-kai Scotland ends the year with our Gala event, which is more than just a tournament—it’s a celebration of all our children. The event features both kata and kumite, with the Champion of the Year recognized as the best in both disciplines. This year, the prestigious title was awarded to Saifullah Bhatti, who received the 2024 Brian Doherty Memorial Shield. This shield, presented in memory of my very first Karate instructor, has been awarded for over 25 years.
We also hold a special ceremony for the Ian Campbell Shield, created to honor one of my longest-serving students who sadly passed away three years ago. This award is given to an individual who demonstrates exceptional attendance and effort throughout the year. This year, it was presented to young Ronni Cleeland, who trains diligently despite managing diabetes and the constant need to monitor her blood sugar levels.
For the competition, the clubs are divided into kyu grades for kata and by height for kumite. Every participant receives medals for each event, along with a certificate recognizing their involvement. As a Gala event, this is more than just a competition—it's a celebration where every participant is rewarded for their dedication and effort.
